Ultimate frisbee is one of the most exciting newer sports around. Well, we say it’s new, but it’s been around since 1968. Anyway, it’s newer than most sports. It’s pretty big in high schools across America and it’s a great alternative for people that aren’t into the big sports like football, basketball, soccer, etc. One of the best things about ultimate frisbee is that you don’t need much equipment – just a frisbee and some cleats. Since they don’t make frisbee-specific cleats, we’ve been looking at soccer and lacrosse cleats to find the best ultimate frisbee cleats.
The Best Ultimate Frisbee Cleat
1. Adidas Performance Men’s Copa Mundial Ultimate Frisbee Cleats

Leather upper
Die-cut EVA insole
Only available in black and white
Synthetic lining
Durable outsole
The Adidas Performance Men’s Copa Mundial Soccer Shoe is one of the classic soccer shoes, which makes it one of the best ultimate frisbee cleats around. It’s used around the world by soccer players because of its tough, durable, and performance-driven design. In fact, it’s been a favorite in the soccer world since the 1970s, and this new version is the best one yet.
This cleat is often hailed as one of the best for under $100. A lot of people buy them purely for their classic design and the fact that you can wear the tongue so many different ways. But, as an ultimate frisbee player, you will be looking at the durability and performance of this shoe. One thing we really like about this cleat is the fact that it’s made from high-quality leather (like old cleats), which means you should get plenty of years of use out of one pair. Having said that, they don’t have the same break-in period as a pair of old boots. They feel pretty comfortable after one wear, which is fantastic. Check out our buying guide for best baseball cleats currently available.
They’re as tough as an old boot.
Awesome classic design.
You don’t have to wear them in.
Not very lightweight.
Some reports of fakes on Amazon.
2. Adidas Performance Mundial Team Turf Ultimate Frisbee Cleats

For indoor and turf use
Leather upper
Die-cut EVA insole
Only available in black and white
Synthetic lining
If you’re playing indoor ultimate frisbee, you might find that the Adidas Performance Mundial Team Turf Soccer Cleat is a better fit for your needs. It’s actually the turf version of the Copa Mundial and is, unsurprisingly, one of the most popular turf cleats on the market today. Like the Copa Mundial, this shoe is all about high-quality materials, durability, and comfort. It’s made from the same Kangaroo leather, which is known for its toughness. And, it has a stitched suede reinforced toe to stop the shoe from coming apart at the end.
Obviously, the main difference is in the cleats on the bottom. Instead of the large protruding cleats, it has lots of smaller ones that grip to a solid ground better. They can still be used on a dry field, but you’re going to spend a lot of time on the floor if you take them out on a wet day. We’d seriously recommend these if you want indoor frisbee shoes that are going to last a long time. It might not be made in Germany, like the real Copa Mundial, but it’s still one of the best-made shoes on the market. You may also like some of the best racquetball shoes from our list, so check them out.
Extremely well made and durable.
One of the most comfortable shoes around.
Grips well to a solid floor.
Not very lightweight.
3. Nike Kids’ Mercurial Vapor XI CR7 FG Ultimate Frisbee Cleats

Leather upper
Synthetic sole
Available in multiple color options
Nike Grip System
Contoured perforated sock liner
If you really want to splash out on your kid’s ultimate frisbee gear, you should check out the Nike Kids’ Mercurial Vapor XI CR7 FG Soccer Cleats. They’re designed to give young soccer players the closest thing to what Cristiano Ronaldo uses when he plays. So, if they’re good enough for one of the highest paid soccer players in the world, they should be good enough for your kid. Of course, because they’re high-end soccer cleats, they have all sorts of technology that is designed to improve the kicking of a ball. But we can ignore that for this article. We’re really interested in the way they fit and help you move across the field.
One of the main innovations in this shoe is the Nike Grip System. It’s integrated into the shoe and is designed to stop the player from sliding across the ground. Even though the boot is really tight compared to others, it’s actually really comfortable and doesn’t take long to break in. Honestly, this shoe is designed so heavily for soccer, you will be paying for a lot of technology that you’re not going to use. But, if you want the best, this is it. Super lightweight and tightfitting.
They look amazing.
Loads of color options.
Lots of unnecessary soccer-based technology.
4. Adidas Performance Men’s Messi 15.3 Soccer Cleat

Synthetic leather upper
Synthetic sole
Available in two color options
Dynamic messiGAMBETRAX stud configuration
messiPRINT center stud
We were surprised about how cheap you can find the Adidas Performance Men’s Messi 15.3 Soccer Cleat. When they were released, they were one of the most sought-after soccer boots on the market, and now you can get them for a hugely discounted price. We’ve included them as our Best Value product because this technology would have cost you a lot more a few years ago.
We think they make a fantastic cleat for ultimate frisbee. One reason is that they look fantastic. They come in two brightly colored designs and would really make you stand out on the ultimate frisbee field. Another reason is that they feature a Dynamic messiGAMBETRAX stud (cleat) configuration. This is designed to give explosive power and speed around the field, which is really helpful in ultimate frisbee.
Great value for a cleat of this quality.
Explosive power and speed.
Colorful design.
Too narrow for wide feet.
Not great on wet ground.
5. Adidas Performance Men’s Ace 16.4 FXG Soccer Shoe

Control Feel upper
Synthetic sole
Available in two color options
Flexible Ground Outsole
This next shoe is the slightly upgraded version of the Lionel Messi cleat we just featured. It’s slightly more expensive, but the technology has been updated to make it more suitable for all types of pitch. Ultimate frisbee is played on multiple different surfaces, so it’s important that your cleat can do it all. The Adidas Performance Men’s Ace 16.4 FXG has a Flexible Ground Outsole. This basically means they perform just as well on firm ground (dry natural grass), artificial grass (long-bladed synthetic fiber) and hard ground. You should get plenty of stability and control at high speeds, without compromising on comfort. Unfortunately, they’re still not the best performers on wet ground.
Like the other modern soccer boots we’ve looked at, these also have a comfortable synthetic lining. This is super important because it prevents blisters and it gives you more control in the boot. The only complaint people have about these boots is that they’re not durable enough. They should last a whole season, but after that, you’ll probably need to replace them. For those of you who are fans of water sports too, we have prepared our selection of the best kayaking shoes, so check them out.
They look amazing.
Versatile on different ground conditions.
Comfortable and tight fitting.
Not the most durable cleat.
Still not great on wet ground.
6. Nike Mercurial Victory VI FG Soccer Cleat

Synthetic leather upper
Rubber sole
Available in multiple colors
Compression Fit
Chevron cleat pattern
The Nike Mercurial Victory VI FG Soccer Cleat is one of the soccer world’s most well-loved cleat. It’s used by loads of amateur and professional soccer players and has become a staple of the sport. It’s towards the expensive side of cleats on this list, so we’d only really recommend for people that are serious about their ultimate frisbee performance. If you’re just getting into the sport, maybe go for something a little less expensive.
The reason this cleat is more expensive is that it’s full of features that are designed to improve performance. For example, it has a lightweight plate on the bottom of the shoe with a chevron-pattern of cleats. This provides stability on both firm and wet grounds. Like most modern boots, it won’t perform great on muddy fields, but ultimate frisbee isn’t often played in bad conditions, so this shouldn’t be a problem. It also has a technology that Nike calls Compression Fit. Instead of the traditional materials, it has a lightweight microfiber material that compresses around the foot and creates the perfect fit. Plus, as is the case with most Nike cleats, there are tons of awesome designs to choose from. Be sure to also check out our reviews of the best triathlon shoes for more excellent sports footwear like this.
Performs well on both firm and wet ground.
Lots of great color options.
Compression Fit provides a snug feel.
Too narrow for wide feet.
7. ASICS Men’s GEL-Provost Low Lacrosse Shoes

Synthetic upper
Rubber sole
GEL cushioning
Multi-functioning cleat plate
Only available in white
Duomax midsole
We’ve featured a lot of soccer cleats in this list, so we thought it was about time we offered an alternative. One of the great things about ultimate frisbee is that you can use cleats from almost any sport. Soccer cleats tend to be faster and more lightweight, but they don’t have as much protection. The great thing about lacrosse cleats is that they’re designed just for running, not kicking a soccer ball. Our favorite lacrosse cleats are the ASICS Men’s GEL-Provost Low Shoes.
The thing that makes these cleats stand out is the multi-function cleat plate. It’s designed to be effective on any terrain. It doesn’t matter if it’s muddy, wet, bone-dry, or somewhere in the middle, this cleat can handle it. They also feature a gel cushioning at the rear of the shoe, which stops the cleats from digging in at the back. And, unlike soccer cleats, they have a lot of ventilation on the upper part of the shoe. This isn’t essential, but it certainly makes for more comfortable playing experience. If you are also into cycling, check out our guide to the best road cycling shoes.
One of the most comfortable cleats on this list.
Plenty of ventilation.
Cleats can work on any surface.
Not as fast as soccer cleats.
8. Under Armour Men’s Speed Phantom Low D Football Shoe

Synthetic upper
Die-cut 4D Foam footbed
Only available in silver and black
Molded TPU plate
Under Armour are quickly becoming one of the biggest names in sports equipment. More and more professional athletes are using their products and that is seeping down into amateur sport. The Under-Armour Men’s Speed Phantom Low D Football Shoe is easily one of the best performers at its price point. It seems to have that perfect blend of traction, stability and a lightweight, low-profile design that sports enthusiasts love.
One of the things that people are raving about is the comfort of this cleat. It has a Die-cut 4D Foam footbed, which is a technology that Under Armour uses in almost all their performance footwear. Basically, it’s a piece of foam that molds to the shape of your foot whilst you play. It means that the cleat gets more and more comfortable until you have the perfect fit inside your shoe. On top of that, they are known to be durable and should last you a couple of seasons, at least. However, some customers have found that the cleats can fall out during a game. It’s important to make sure they are properly tightened before you start playing, seeing as they’re not integrated into the shoe. For some awesome workout footwear, check out our reviews of the best cross training shoes.
Very comfortable fit inside the cleat.
Well-made and durable.
Cleats are known to come loose.
Ultimate Frisbee Cleat Buying Guide & FAQ
How We Chose Our Selection Of Ultimate Frisbee Cleats
Reviews - Customer reviews are one of the best resources we have available. We can read the opinion of hundreds (sometimes thousands) of customers who have already bought the item we’re reviewing. Not only that, but they have used them in all sorts of different situations that we couldn’t test ourselves. When it comes to reading reviews of frisbee cleats, we are looking for information about the comfort, build quality and other things that will affect your purchase.
Brand - Checking out the brand is important when you’re buying any product. With ultimate frisbee cleats, a well-known brand can often be a sign of quality and the latest technology.
Price - Not everyone has the same budget and we understand that. If you’ve got a large family and they all need new cleats, you need to look for a high-quality budget option. However, if you’re playing ultimate frisbee in a league, you might want to invest some more money and get a really high-quality pair.
Features To Look For In Ultimate Frisbee Cleats
Cleat Length - You want the cleat to be as close as possible to the end of your toe, without touching it. Ideally, you want a ¼ or ½ inch gap between your toe and the end of the cleat.
Cleat Material (frisbee cleats must not be metal) - In ultimate frisbee, you can’t have metal cleats (or studs) on the bottom of the shoe. So, you need to choose from plastic or rubber.
Cleat Position - Every different shoe will have a different layout of cleats on the bottom of the shoe. This shouldn’t affect performance hugely, but you might want to try on a few different pairs and see what position works best for you.
Laces - It’s important to have high-quality laces that are long enough to provide a tight fit on your ultimate frisbee cleats.
Comfort - When you’re out on the field, it’s important to be comfortable. However, it’s worth mentioning that most cleats will need wearing in, so they might not be comfortable the first time you wear them.
Size - On almost every listing, there should be a size chart explaining the different sizes of the cleat. If not, a quick Google search will show you how to find the right size.
Grip - The cleats (or studs) on the bottom of the shoe will give you plenty of grip when you’re moving across the field.
Ultimate Frisbee Cleats FAQ
Q: Do you need cleats for ultimate frisbee?
A: Yes. Cleats are designed to provide grip on soft ground, like fields. Without them, you’ll spend more time on the floor than playing frisbee.
Q: What are the positions in ultimate frisbee?
A: There are only two positions in Ultimate Frisbee – the handler and the cutter. The handle is the one handling the frisbee. The cutter is the one moving around so the handler can throw the frisbee to them.
