A foot bath is a great way to relax your feet and ease any aches and pains. One of the aspects of swollen feet in pregnancy is due to heat. A pregnant woman’s body temperature is very likely to increase during pregnancy as a result of the increased circulation needed to deliver all those valuable nutrients to the mother and the baby. Soothe your feet by cooling them down in a nice foot bath. Don’t do this in icy cold water as this will constrict your blood vessels and it can feel painful. Choose Your Shoes
High heels may look fashionable but we all know they aren’t the most comfortable shoes. You can look trendy during pregnancy, but ditch the heels for a few months and wear shoes that will be comfortable when you put them on in the morning, and accommodate any swelling your feet encounter in the latter part of the day. There is plenty of good quality and comfortable shoes for pregnancy so don’t jam your precious feet into uncomfortable shoes that will make you feel miserable.
Ditch The Tight Clothing
If there is ever a time when you really need ditch fashion for comfort, it’s during pregnancy. Tight clothing may look good, but any unnecessary tightness around your ankles will exacerbate a swelling problem in feet. Keep your clothing loose and choose breathable fabrics.
Limit Your Salt Intake
During pregnancy, your body will already be retaining a lot of extra fluids so you don’t want to be consuming something that will result in even more water retention. Limit your salt intake. For that matter, eliminate salt as much as you can. It’s better for your health and the health of your baby.
As crazy as it sounds, a lack of water can also contribute to swelling feet during pregnancy. By not getting enough fluids, your body reacts by holding on to as much water as it can so keep up your water intake. In fact, during pregnancy, you should be aiming for a few extra glasses on top of what you’d normally consume.
Talk To Your Ob-Gyn
While some swelling of the feet is normal during pregnancy, this can also be a symptom of serious pregnancy issues such as preeclampsia or deep vein thrombosis. If you are worried about any of these conditions, talk to your Ob-Gyn. They will be able to run any necessary tests and put your mind at ease. It may just be a regular case of pregnancy-induced swollen feet, but it’s always better to go for a regular check-up and be certain.
