How To Choose The Right Size Football
Selecting The Perfect Size Football
The most important piece of equipment that you need when playing football is the ball itself. You could be fully equipped with soccer bags and shoes, but if you don’t have a decent football, it’s impossible for the game to go ahead.
While buying footballs may seem like a walk in the park, many people tend to get a bit confused over the different sizing options available. Within this guide, we will be taking you through how to choose the right size football for your game. This will all boil down to factors such as age and expertise.
What Size Football Should I Buy?
Choosing the right size football is actually an incredibly easy process. All that you need to do is assess the age of the people playing and then make the assumption from there. Below, you will find all of the information needed to guide you through this process:
- Players Aged 9 And Under: Those under the age of 9 should use a size 5 ball, also known as a pee-wee ball. If you can’t tell by the name ‘pee-wee’, these balls are the smallest you can get. It’s important for those under the age of 9 to have a smaller ball so that they can handle it easily and kick it without causing injury. A ball too big will just result in a lack of grip, making it unfair for all of the players.
- Players Aged 10 to 12: Those around the 10 to 12 age mark should now have the strength to handle a slightly larger ball. However, as this is still a young age where everyone is growing at different rates, only move up to a size 6 ball. Size 6 balls are often referred to as junior balls.
- Players Aged 12 to 14: For the players aged 12 to 14, it’s recommended to upgrade to a size 7 ball (also known as a youth ball). Size 7 balls are once again slightly larger than pee-wee and junior balls, making them perfect for teenagers with a bit more strength and stability. This size ball will also allow room for a more skilful game, allowing the teens to become well-rounded players.
- Players Aged 14+: Players aged 14 and upwards are deemed suitable to start using official size 9 footballs. Those using a size 9 ball for the first time may struggle to begin with, but as they practise more, their skillset will look better than ever before.
What Size Football Do Footballers Use?
Unless the players are under the age of 14, all professional footballers use a size 9 football. This size is considered to be the ‘official’ size of a football as it is large enough to allow a skilful yet challenging game. Professional footballers find that they gain more control using a size 9 football, helping them to score goal after goal.
Play With The Right Ball And Everything Else Will Fall Into Place
As you can see, there is not a lot of difficulties involved with establishing what football is right for your game. Just as long as you know the age of the players, it should be pretty easy to figure the rest out.
While it might be tempting to use the wrong sized football out of convenience, you will only find yourself frustrated when the game isn’t being played to its full potential. Our bodies change and develop a lot as we grow up, and if we use a football too small or too large, we won’t be able to play as well as we’d like.
