Alternate Between Sitting And Standing
Working at a standing desk does have a bit of an adjustment period so when you first try working at one, alternate between your regular sitting desk and the standing one. You can continue alternating between the two desks even after you’ve become accustomed to the standing desk as being on your feet all day can be just as bad as sitting all day.
Adjust Your Standing Desk
Most standing desks have adjustable heights which is just as well because we humans come in all shapes and sizes. Adjust the height to a level that is comfortable for you paying close attention to where your arms are. You should be able to rest your elbows at a 90-degree angle on your standing desk without raising or lowering your arms.
Use The Arm Supports
One of the aspects that make adjusting to a standing desk a challenge is holding your elbow and forearm suspended in the air so you can work the mouse. The solution is to use arm supports. This support allows you to rest your elbow and forearm just like you normally do at a sitting desk. If your standing desk doesn’t have built-in arm support, you can add one separately.
Get A Standing Desk Mat
A standing desk just isn’t the same without a standing desk mat. These mats are often referred to as anti-fatigue mats as they offer comfort and support to your feet when you are standing at your desk working all day. Some of these mats even have a few bumps and other features so you can stretch and exercise your feet while you work.
Focus On Your Posture
You should be focusing on your posture regardless of whether you work in a sitting or standing position. Maintaining a good posture takes the pressure from your back and your internal organs will be better positioned which helps them function better. However, when you are standing, it is easy to droop your shoulders and hunch over. Make a point of correcting your posture at regular intervals. Many office workers, particularly women, choose fashion over comfort when it comes to footwear for the office. You may be able to get through the day in heels if you sit down at work all day, but standing in heels all day will result in back pain that you will feel in your shoulders, hips and all the way down your legs. We won’t even discuss how painful this will be for your poor feet. Working at a standing desk will be so much easier and more comfortable if you are wearing good quality shoes that cradle and support your feet. There are plenty of shoes you can choose from that don’t look like sneakers so just check that the insoles are nicely cushioned and you have supportive soles as well.
Take Your Breaks
Don’t make a habit of working through your breaks, especially if you are getting used to working at a standing desk. Regular breaks throughout the day are necessary to give your legs and back a break from standing in one spot. If you don’t feel like sitting down, go for a short walk outside or even around the office. Taking your breaks will also help you clear your mind, grab a coffee, and be more productive when you return to your desk.
Give It Time
If you’ve sat at a desk your whole working life, getting used to working at a standing desk won’t be easy and there may be times when you want to give up and stick to your regular sitting desk. As with all new endeavors, adjusting to a standing desk is going to take some time but if you are determined to master working at a standing desk, you must be patient.
