You can find more fulfillment in walking to work if you make meeting people one of your goals. You are likely to meet more commuters on your way to work, and if you happen to meet people who work in close proximity to your place of work, all the better. If you do your commuting alone most of the time, you are most likely to get bored and lonely most of the time. You can consider meeting new buddies, make a new friend each day and get social.
