How To Stay Motivated During A Workout
Stay Motivated During A Workout
Working out is easy, right? Not all the time, but half the time, the biggest battle is getting off the couch and out the door. It really doesn’t matter what your workout involves. It could be CrossFit, a session at the gym or just a 5-mile run. A workout, is a workout.
Some days you feel like you could tackle a mountain and other days you barely feel motivated enough to tie the laces on your running shoes. The key to success is to keep moving, even when you really don’t want to. Here are some ways for you to stay motivated during a workout so you push through, even on those days you feel like couch surfing with a bag of chips and a cheesy movie.
Turn On The Tunes
Music soothes the savage beast and no beast is more frightening than a lack of motivation. Instead of running for cover, turn on your favorite tunes and keep going. Play music that inspires you or choose something energizing that will lift your spirits. Put your playlist of pumping songs on your phone, grab your earbuds and go. Once you focus on the songs, you’ll forget that this was a workout you didn’t really want to do. The same goes for running, there are many benefits of running with music.
Try Something New
Doing the same workouts week after week may seem fine at first, but after a while these same workouts will start to feel like a boring chore. Change it up and try something new. Switch to a fitness class or go swimming instead of your usual workout. The main thing is that you do something. They say a change is as good as a holiday so try something different and stay motivated.
Look The Part
As silly as it sounds, the wrong workout clothes can either make you or break you. If you’ve put on those stained, baggy track pants and your most comfortable, oversized t-shirt, you may not really feel like an athlete, so you’ll be less likely to act like one. Go shopping for some sexy workout clothes and step out in style. When you look like a serious athlete, you’ll be more motivated to act the part and work harder.
Workout With A Buddy
Whenever you can, workout with a friend. The two of you can motivate each other to keep going. Even when you feel like you can’t take another step or lift another ounce, you’ll have your workout buddy their urging you on. It’s also more fun working out with friends and you’re sure to do so much better when you’re having fun.
Stay Away From The Negative Nellies
Don’t let anyone rain on your parade. You can be as excited about your workout as a kid at Christmas and then that one person who never has anything positive to say comes along and all your motivation has evaporated like a pot of water on high heat. The next thing you know you’ve grabbed your gym bag and you’re on your way home. The best way to avoid this situation is to avoid these negative types. You’ll feel better and keep your motivation alive.
Have Some Tea
We normally associate tea with relaxing but there are some types of tea that can actually enhance your workout and keep you motivated. Teas such as matcha and yerba mate consist of small amounts of caffeine. Not enough to make you jittery, but enough to keep you motivated. It’ll give you a little bit of a boost when you need it the most. Have a cup of one of these teas, or a similar one, before your workout and you’ll put a pep in your step. The beauty of these teas is that they have additional health benefits and they taste pretty good too.
Plan A Post-Workout Meal
During a workout, you’ll expend a decent amount of energy and you’ll want to replenish that energy once you’re done. Think of what you’d like to eat after your workout and use that to push you forward. It can be a salad you prepared before you left the house or your favorite smoothie place in town. You can combine the workout and the food in one go. You can walk or jog to your favorite smoothie place or café for your post workout meal or beverage. If there’s one thing that will keep you moving is the promise of giving your taste buds a workout too.
Food isn’t the only way to reward yourself for sticking to your workout. You can motivate yourself to stick to your workout with the promise of a reward. It can be absolutely anything. You may have been wanting to see that cool new movie, or you may want to spoil yourself with a visit to the spa. Or maybe you’ve been eyeing a super cool jacket. Keep your rewards as realistic as possible so that you stay motivated during your workout. You can motivate yourself with short term and long-term rewards.
Change Your State Of Mind
Staying motivated during a workout is all about synchronizing your mind, body and soul. If you keep thinking of your workout as something you must do, you’ll never see it as anything more than a chore or obligation. Look at working out as something you enjoy and something that will benefit you in a number of ways. Think of how you feel after a workout and remind yourself of how positive and energized you’ll be when you’re done.
Listen To Your Body
Staying motivated during a workout is important if you want to stick to your fitness routine, but you’ll do yourself more harm than good if you’re not feeling well or you’re in pain. It’s okay to take it easy if you’re not feeling well or if you overdid it during your last workout. If you really don’t feel like going through the motions, just go for a short walk to clear your mind. If you’re really feeling ill or you’re injured, take a break so you recover faster and make up for lost time when you’re feeling better.
