How To Wear Shoes That Are Too Big
Wearing Shoes That Are Too Big
Why on earth would anyone wear shoes that are too big? Well, it does happen and most of us will have worn a bigger sized pair at least once in our lifetime. It could be that your favorite shoes have stretched out from constant use or you found a fantastic pair of shoes at a ridiculously great price but the only pair left was one size too big for you. Many of us have had to wear a bigger pair of shoes because we’ve had to borrow them for a short time. Whatever your reasons for wearing shoes that are too big, you’ve got to try and make them as comfortable as possible. We’ve found some great ideas on how to wear shoes that are too big so you won’t look like a clown wearing those huge novelty shoes.
1. Toilet Paper Classic
For decades we humans have stuffed toilet paper in the toes of too-big shoes to make them fit. It’s not the most comfortable solution, but it certainly works in an emergency situation. Most people will have found themselves in this situation. You’re visiting a friend or a cousin and they invite you to dinner at a fancy restaurant or to go clubbing with them. The trouble is, you don’t have the right shoes. Your friend or cousin offers to lend you theirs but they’re a size too big. Grab a wad of toilet paper and stuff a few sheets into the toes. Try them on and add or remove the toilet paper until they feel comfortable. The best thing about this is that you can freshen up the bundle in your toes during the evening if you need to.
2. Grab Some Insoles
Toilet paper isn’t the most comfortable solution for wearing shoes that are too big so you’ll fare much better if you put some comfortable insoles in your shoes. The best thing about insoles is that these babies will fill in a good portion of the free space in your shoes and they’ll probably cushion your feet at the same time. This is a win-win scenario. Keep in mind though, that most insoles wear out quite fast so you will need to replace them. It won’t really matter if you really love the too-big shoes you want to keep wearing.
3. Use Heel Grips
If your shoes are only too big by the tiniest margin, heel grips are a great solution. These simply attach to the inside heel of your shoe giving you a snugger fit. Put them in the heel of your shoe and try them on before you head out the door. You may need to reposition the heel grip and this is best done at home. If you don’t position them correctly you may end up with nasty blisters and you’ll be uncomfortable the entire time you wear them. You also might benefit from using heel inserts.
4. Cushions For The Balls Of Your Feet
No matter what type of shoes you want to wear, you can add special cushions that have been specifically designed to place under the balls of your feet. These will make all manner of shoes more fitting and comfortable and are great for use with sandals or any shoes where a full insole may be visible or if you just don’t like wearing shoes with a full insole.
5. Wear Thicker Socks
Boot socks are a hiker’s best friend, but they can also be a true buddy if you find you need to put on a pair of shoes that are too big for you. Boot socks are often well padded on the bottom and thicker everywhere else so they make the ideal filling for the extra space in your shoes. They’re great for wearing any winter boots, walking shoes or sneakers and most sock drawers will have at least one pair of boot socks in them. If you don’t have a pair of boot socks in your drawer, grab a couple of pairs of socks and layer them over your feet until you can wear those too big shoes comfortably.
6. Shrink Your Shoes
Water and heat can be used to shrink your shoes down a little. Simply wet them completely and leave them to dry in the sun or speed dry them in the clothes dryer. You can also dry them faster with a hairdryer or even use specialized shoe dryers. Only do this if you absolutely have no other choice as this can end up ruining a perfectly good pair of shoes. Check the materials and see if you can do this without destroying your shoes.
7. Take Them To A Cobbler
If you have a favorite pair of shoes or a new pair you just had to have but couldn’t find your exact size, take them to a professional cobbler and see if they can resize them for you. A cobbler will be able to tell you if it’s worth your while to resize the shoes and will certainly have the skills to do this without ruining them. This is a dying trade though, so be prepared for a hefty price for this service.
When Not To Wear Too Big Shoes
If you need to be in shoes for several hours then you really need to make sure your shoes fit comfortably. Hiking, working long hours standing or even all day and night events like weddings are not the best times to be wearing oversized shoes. Shoes that are too big move over your feet too much and can cause blisters so unless you plan on sitting down and watching everyone else have fun, you’re better off finding shoes that fit perfectly.
What Size Shoe Is Too Big?
Wearing shoes that are too big is never going to be comfortable but you can get away with wearing them occasionally. You’ll be fine as long as the shoes are only up to one size too big. If your shoes are two or more sizes too big, move on. These will be super uncomfortable and you will find yourself walking in them very awkwardly and you put yourself at risk of tripping over those too-big shoes.
