Why Shoes Should Not Be Worn In The House
Reasons Not To Wear Shoes In The House
We wear shoes every day because we need to. It’s a way of protecting our feet while we are outside so we don’t step on anything harmful or disgusting. They are also an essential piece to any outfit, completing our good looks when we venture out in the city. But do you take your shoes off when you walk into your home or do you wear them while you walk around the house? I hate to break the news for you but, this is something you really need to avoid doing. Here are some reasons why we shouldn’t wear our shoes in the house.
1. Think Hygiene
If you hate cleaning floors, as most people do, not wearing shoes in the house will make keeping your floors clean a lot easier. Walking outside, whether in a country area or city streets mean our shoes are treading into all manner of dirt and debris. Once you pass through your house in these shoes, all of that muck will inevitably end up on your floors which will become dirty and dusty a lot faster, not to mention those unsightly shoe prints that will be very noticeable. What’s even worse is that even after you’ve taken your shoes off and are walking around barefoot, you may even end up picking up this mess on the soles of your feet. Then you put your feet up on the couch or go to bed and transfer the mess to your furniture as well. All in all, not wearing your shoes in the house will make it a whole lot easier to keep the place clean and tidy. You will not have to clean the floors so often and the rest of your house will be cleaner too.
2. What You Don’t See Is Even Worse
Something we don’t think about when wearing our shoes indoors is how much bacteria we bring in. Bacteria is everywhere but remains invisible to the naked eye. The ground and pavements outside are covered with all sorts of bacteria. Several studies have revealed that a single shoe can carry over 400 000 particles of bacteria. Many of them probably will not be harmful to our health, but some strains of E-coli can cause a multitude of health problems making you and your family very sick. If you wear shoes in your house you are exposing yourself and your family contracting more diseases and you are may find you are getting sick with an alarming frequency. This can be especially dangerous for households that have toddlers and kids that constantly crawl and play on the floor. Tots are notorious for putting fingers and objects in their mouths so if they are picking up germs from outdoor shoes, this puts them at greater risk.
3. The World Outside Is Covered In Toxins
Germs and bacteria are one issue with wearing outdoor shoes inside, but your shoes are also carriers for many toxic chemicals that we do not even know about. While cars drive on the roads, they will leak all sorts of harmful chemicals such as petrol, antifreeze, and motor oil. Lawns and gardens are sprayed with all types of fertilizers and weed killers that can have a seriously negative impact on our health. We walk into our houses not knowing that all of these toxins are spread throughout our floors and on our furniture via the soles of our shoes. These chemicals can cause major skin and respiratory health problems. These toxins can be irritating to your skin and all of those chemicals are released into the air that you and your family breathe.
4. It’s Healthier For Your Feet
The reason for not wearing shoes in the house isn’t all about doom and gloom. Another side that you should look at is that it is healthier for your feet if you take your shoes off while inside. If you wear your shoes all day it can cause foot problems and by the end of the day, your feet are usually swollen and sore. While they are on your feet for the majority of the day, sweat and dirt build up in your shoes and on your feet causing athletes foot. Your shoes will wear out faster if you wear them for long periods of time so take them off once you get home and put on a pair of house slippers. Your feet need to breathe and move freely for natural movement. Give your feet some relief and stop dragging the smell throughout the house.
5. Your Carpets And Hard Floors Will Thank You
Shoes that have sharp and hard soles, stiletto heels, and metal bits can ruin your floors. If you have wooden floors you are most likely going to make deep scratches, and stomping on them will embed more invisible dirt and toxins. Shoes can also ruin your carpets, ripping them and pulling fabric out of them and eventually destroy them. Besides the possible damage you can keep your carpets cleaner by not walking over them in dirty outdoor shoes.
6. You Will Be A Considerate Neighbor
If you live in an apartment building you will know how annoying it is when your upstairs neighbor makes a noise that distracts you while you are trying to work or if you just want to relax after a hard day. You might not even realize that you are the noisy upstairs neighbor. Take your shoes off when you get home from work or school. Especially if you are wearing boots or stilettos or any other shoes that have a hard sole. They make a lot of noise over wooden or tiled floors and the sound seems to amplify. Avoid any awkward situations with your neighbors and take your shoes off as soon as you enter your home.
7. You Will Be More Organized
If you take your shoes off at the front door, you will be more organized. If you are a forgetful person, and sometimes can’t remember where you left your shoes, leave them at the front door when you take them off. Get a shoe rack and place it at the entrance where they are ready to go when you are.
There are plenty of reasons why you shouldn’t wear shoes inside your house. You will have fewer health problems and you will have to clean less, which is a bonus for everyone that hates doing chores. Taking your shoes off when you get home after a busy is a signal for your body to relax so kick off your shoes and unwind.
